The book of Nahum is the second of two prophecies concerning the people of Nineveh. It comes roughly 100-150 years after the prophet Jonah's message, yet it is radically different in that Nineveh's doom is sealed and Nahum's message is not one that contains the potential for hope. In fact the prophet doesn't even bring the message to the city, but instead, delivers this prophecy to the people of Israel. Contained within that message is a litany of references on the character of God, especially that He is a jealous, vengeful, and wrathful God. Yet the purpose of this is not to highlight God's wrath in and of itself, but to point the Israelites toward finding hope in the fact that God is a God of vengeance.
