The apostle John opened his letter to the churches, to both Jews and Gentiles, by describing Jesus Christ as the eternal Word, and it is the Word who created all things, and nothing exists that was not created by Him. It is in Jesus that life itself exists, and He is the Light of men. All of life, then, is not a coincidence that happened in some murky swamp, but all of life was created by the Word, and the Word is Light. When we think of light, we think of physical light, the light that brightens the colorful dawn of a new day. Here in Palomino Valley, we can watch as the eastern sunlight washes the surrounding mountains dotted with sagebrush and Juniper pines, chasing away the darkness. But the Light the apostle speaks of is spiritual Light. Spiritual Light, as we all know, reveals human darkness, exposing the ungodly sins of our fallen nature, while it promises not only a new day, but a new, eternal life. That human darkness represents the lack of true knowledge of God. That darkness is opposed to Light, opposite to Light, opposed to God and rebellious to the things of God, and men rejected the Light because of their unbelief, and the love of their sins. Therefore, John the Baptist was appointed by God to come into this world to be a witness to the Light, because the blind cannot see Light, and John's testimony gave witness to the truth about Jesus so that the blind could believe the truth; the fact that Jesus Christ is the Word; the true Light.
