Certain attributes of God we will never experience. For example, God is all powerful and all knowing; that will never be true of us. But some attributes of God are communicable. God is love, joy, and peace… and He shares such treasures of His nature with His people. When something is communicable, it is caught through close contact with the source. (A head cold, for example, is caught when we’re in close contact with someone who had it first!) God’s communicable attributes are experienced by us when we’re in close contact with Him. That’s why Jesus told His distressed disciples that they’d experience His joy, wellness and peace despite living in a world opposed to Christ and His gospel. In this world, trouble is certain. “… you will have tribulation.” Yet in our trouble, sorrow turns to peace as we stay in close contact with Him. “… in Me you may have peace.” This Sunday, we’ll continue our study of John’s gospel with “Peace for distressed disciples.”
