Old Testament – “Sheol” – Nu 16:33, Pr 23:13-14 2. New Testament – “Hades”; “Gehenna”; “Tartarus” B. What is Hell like? 1. It is awful – Mt 8:12, 13:38-42, 49-50, 22:13, 24:51, Lk 13:28, 2 Th 1:6-8, Jd 13, Re 14:10-11 2. It is eternal – Mt 25:46, Mk 9:43, 2 Th 1:9 3. It is a second, living “death” – Ro 6:23, Re 2:11, 20:6, 20:14, 21:8 4. It was created for Satan and his angels – 2 Pe 2:4, Mt 25:41, Jd 6, Re 19:20, 20:10 5. Unrepentant sinners are sent there by God – Mt 5:22, 29-30, 7:13, 10:28, Mk 9:45,47, Lk 12:5, Re 20:15 6. In some sense, those who go there “choose” to do so(?) – Jn 3:19-20 a. To be away from the presence of God – Jn 3:20, 2 Th 1:9 b. To keep from having to repent – Ro 3:10-18, Re 21:8, Ps 37:12, Ac 7:54 C. Two questions: 1. Is God unjust in sending people to Hell? – Ro 9:14, De 32:3-4 2. Should the loss of one soul in Hell spoil the joy for those who are |
