The Church refuses to believe God's truth tellers, and so in fear of the unknown they believe liars and rebel against His will; so He gives them their will as a self-fulfilled prophecy of defeatism and death. (1st generation of the Israelites will die in the dessert after being turned away from the Promised Land due to their murmuring against God and wishing they COULD die in the dessert instead of going into the Promised Land).
