Paul's fourth and final proof of Israel's failure as Yahweh's covenant son is the most general. Not only was Israel's entire life with God defined by grumbling, Paul's statement can be associated with more than one incident during the wilderness period. But whichever particular incident (if any) he may have had in mind, Paul's reference to Israel's grumbling must be interpreted in the light of what transpired with the return of the twelve spies (Numbers 13-14). For that incident reset and redefined Israel's relationship with its covenant God and Father. There the covenant son's triumph and hopeful expectation were shattered by the sentence of desolation and death; there the nation's fate was sealed.
