Jesus' entry into Jerusalem in Luke begins with Luke 9:51 and is about His "ascent" to Jerusalem that culminates in His entry, riding on the colt of a donkey. This was predicted in Zechariah 9:9. This sermon covers much more than the event of Jesus entering Jerusalem, but shows its significance in Bible prophecy from the OT and prophecy from Jesus Himself that has future fulfillment. Jesus' entry is filled with irony. The terms for "tie" and "untie" are used several times and likely refer to the Jacob's blessing of Judah in Genesis 49:11. That prediction was about royalty and wealth from the line of Judah. But in Luke there is humility and rejection. The Lord ascends to heaven (Luke 24:51) and reigns at the right hand of God. The Lord who came in on the colt will come again, according to Revelation 19, on a white war horse as conquering King.
In Luke Jesus predicted that He would be rejected in Jerusalem and prophesied that Jerusalem would be destroyed. We show how "stones" are mentioned in various ways in Luke. Jesus laments over Jerusalem in Luke, revealing His love and compassion, but also the certainty of judgment. Luke uses the term "visitation" to describe Christ's first advent. In the sermon, we show that visitations of God mean salvation and judgment. In this case, unexpected people are saved, and the leadership of Jerusalem rejects Messiah and will some under judgment. There are speeches early in Luke that serve as divinely inspired previews of salvation and judgment. Jesus' coming means "the fall and rise of many in Israel" (in Luke 2:24). There is peace, but only for those who trust the Prince of Peace. The rest face judgment.
