In 1 Kings 18, Elijah wanted all of Israel to gather on Mount Carmel to witness the great victory of God over all the false prophets of the day. He also wanted God’s people to make a choice whom they would follow.
Elijah knew that the Lord’s people had to separate themselves from the idols of their day and that they needed to whole heartedly follow the Lord.
What was true in Elijah’s day is just as true in our day.
Australia today is full of idols. We are a nation that is obsessed with sporting idols.
Many in our nation today are obsessed with Idols of music and screen. Others in our nation are obsessed with materialism.
The Altar of the Lord was broken down. Imagine the scene, on one side the People of God,…the compromisers. On the other side the prophets of Baal, ..the idolaters.
In the middle of the compromisers and in the middle of the idolaters one solitude figure, what is he doing?
In my mind’s eye Elijah is weeping. He stares at a broken people and he stares at a broken altar.
The people are broken because the altar is broken.
The place of sacrifice had been forgotten by God’s people.
God in His great love had wanted blood to be spilt on the altars of sacrifice so that His people would be reminded that their sins brought death and that God in His love would cover their sins by the death of an innocent victim.
The altar of sacrifice had been forgotten, it was a heap of rubble, it was in ruins, it needed restoration.
Elijah sees a broken people and a broken altar and before the people can be restored the altar, the place of sacrifice must be restored.
