The scene described in this passage is the saddest and most appalling in all of history. The serpent, controlled by the devil, caused Eve to doubt the reality of the Word of God, and she turned away from what she knew God had said, and made judgments instead on the basis of what she desired. The conviction that Adam and Eve had formed that their condition would only improve by turning against the divine prohibition became a grand delusion. Only the persevering grace of God could mitigate the horrors of sin and death.
