Our Great High Priest (Heb 4:14-5:10) Introduction Hebrews has a remarkably full description of Christ our Redeemer. And we need to be able to understand and appreciate all the aspect of Christ's preeminence.
1. Why does the author call Jesus a Priest? It comes from the New Testament's favorite psalm, Psalm 110.
2. What's required to become a Priest? (a) A priest must be someone taken from among men (v. 1). (b) A priest must be someone able to sympathize with men (v. 2). (c) A priest must be someone who is called of God (v. 4).
All of these are applied to Jesus in v. 7-10.
3. What's involved in being a Priest? (a) A priest represents men in things pertaining to God (v. 1). (b) A priest offers gifts and sacrifices for the sins of his people (v. 1,3). (c) A priest makes continual intercession for the people (v. 7).
Application: We need to understand the present ministry of our High Priest. Why does Jesus appear for us now in glory? To plead the Father day by day to forgive us?
WSC 25: Q. How doth Christ execute the office of a priest? A. Christ executeth the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, and reconcile us to God, and in making continual intercession for us.
Conclusion: Christ is the anchor of our souls to God. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
