The early Church was born in prayer and prayer was a characteristic of its existence (2:42). When Jesus trained the apostles, He warned them there would be great opposition to the Gospel. He promised He would never leave or forsake them. As prophesied, persecution had come. Peter and John had been incarcerated and threatened with violence if they continued to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Upon their release they went to "their own" (v.23) to report the dangers the Church would face. The Church responded by doing what their Savior had commanded. They prayed. This first recorded prayer is a great example of how we should approach our Lord in fervent prayer.
