What does this have to do with Jonah? Only this: The Bible is quite clear than when it comes to spiritual activity we are either awake or sleeping. We are either in tune to and participating in what is going on or we are ignorant of it and therefore miss it completely. Sometimes God’s work, like a normal alarm clock when it goes off, is broad and seen and heard by everyone. Sometimes it very targeted like a burst of light and sound aimed directly into our own soul. Either way, the work is aimed at accomplishing one purpose: to awaken us from the depths of our spiritual slumber.
The story of Jonah is often misunderstood. Finish this statement: Jonah and the ____. But the book of Jonah isn’t really about a whale at all (3 verses), it’s about God. And it’s about Jonah only insofar as we see his interaction with and response to the will of God. But make no mistake Jonah is not the center of the story, God is: namely what he reveals to us about his mission and his character.
