INTRODUCTION: God’s covenant with Abraham shows us how God establishes a relationship with man. As He does with the Jewish people, God always keeps His promises to man. This truth serves as another proof of how we can know that we are eternally secure in our salvation. I. ABRAM BELIEVED IN GOD (Genesis 15:1-6) A. God Appeared to Abram (Genesis 15:1) 1. The manner of the appearance—“in a vision” 2. The message of the appearance—“Fear not, Abram.” 3. The motivation of the appearance a. “I am thy shield.” b. I am “thy exceeding great reward.” B. Abram Reminded God of the Promised Seed (Genesis 15:2-3) 1. At present, Abram was childless (Genesis 15:2). 2. Abram’s heir was one (not his son) born in his house (Genesis 15:3). C. God Renewed His Promise (Genesis 15:4-5) 1. Of a son (Genesis 15:4) 2. Of a seed as the stars of heaven (Genesis 15:5) D. Abram Believed in the Lord (Genesis 15:6) 1. He believed in the promise of God. 2. Abram received an imputed righteousness because of his faith (Romans 4:3-6, Romans 4:9, Romans 4:20-25; Galatians 3:6-14). 3. All those saved during this age are the spiritual children of Abraham. II. GOD ESTABLISHED HIS COVENANT (Genesis 15:7-21) A. Abram Asked for Evidence of the Promise (Genesis 15:7-8) B. God Required a Sacrifice to be Made (Genesis 15:9-11) 1. The animals to be sacrificed (Genesis 15:9) a. An heifer of three years old b. A she goat of three years old c. A ram of three years old d. A turtledove e. A young pigeon 2. The method of sacrifice (Genesis 15:10) 3. Abram’s protection of the sacrifice (Genesis 15:11) 4.
