A popular quote since the mid-twentieth century has been, "Ideas have consequences." And while this quote is usually attributed to an unbeliever, the quote has been often used by Christian theologians and apologists to sum up an important truth. Our ideas about the nature of God and of ourselves have an overwhelming impact upon both our ethics and our theology. If those ideas are not based upon the truth as it is revealed in the Holy Scriptures, then the consequences are, among other things, a distorted understanding of God and a perverted view of right and wrong. This is where the church of Malachi's day found itself. They had rejected the truth of God's sovereign love, the biblical precepts of worship, and the biblical family pattern (theology), and now they charged God with injustice and indifference (ethics). Once again, the burden of Malachi is very contemporary.
