Paul addressed the Corinthians' question regarding food sacrificed to idols in terms of Christian freedom and slavery: Believers are Christ's freedmen, set free by Him to be His bondservants, and therefore slaves of all men for the sake of the gospel. To fulfill this calling, they must yield themselves to Christ's mastery by "making their bodies their slaves." Paul continued this line of thought in chapter ten, but by framing the question of "idol meats" in terms of the larger issue of idolatry. And for that discussion he turned to the Israelite salvation history and the role and relevance of that history for the Church - those "upon whom the ends of the ages have come."
