In the final analysis, the soldiers and rulers of the Jews who stood beholding Jesus on the cross saw nothing of what was really happening. Many today and in years gone by have seen little more than man's cruelty, a noble person suffereing unjustly, or as even a reason not to take religion seriously; or as Albert Schweitzer, who could see a disappointed Jesus at last casting himself into death as a means to bringing in the kingdom which had not come.
