From the springboard of verse 14, Paul launches into what may be the highest and most penetrating treatment of the person of Christ in the New Testament.
In an environment in which Christ's supremacy is threatened, his person depreciataed and his work devalued, this positive declaration of truth with polemic intent is vital, for 'a true Christology is the antidote to all heresy' (Hiebert).
Here we observe an obstacle identified - the living and true God is the unseen God, who cannot be perceived with the mortal eye nor comprehended by the mortal understanding. God himself provides the remedy: Jesus Christ, the image of the unseen God, who is his perfect representation and saving manifestation.
We should rejoice that the Lord God has made himself known in Christ; we should be content to know God in and by Christ; and, we should set out to know God in and by Christ, and to know him ever more fully.
