What we will look at today is relevant for God’s New Covenant people. The apostle Peter applies the truths of Exodus 19 to the New Covenant Church in 1st Peter. In summing up the message of everything that God will teach Israel while camped at Sinai. Peter says this to the New Covenant Church purchased by the blood of the Lamb.
1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.â€
Later in 1st Peter 2 Peter quotes terminology from Exodus 19:6a and applies it to the church.
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
With these connections let us give ear to God’s word in Exodus 19. For God is speaking to more than Old Covenant Israel. He is speaking to the New Covenant Church. He who has an ear let him hear. And let us do so mindful that the focus of the opening paragraph is the obedience of the redeemed. Our focus will be on the heart of the passage which is verses 4-6a and is outlined by Alec Motyer in the following way.
-1st-What the Lord has done (v. 4) -2nd-What the Lord requires (v. 5a) -3rd-What the Lord promises (vv. 5b-6a)
