We examine the matter of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in the 2nd chapter of Acts and identify it as the regenerative work of the Spirit wrought in all true believers at their conversion. The miraculous wonders performed on that day (the mighty rushing wind, the tongues of fire, and the instant ability to speak in a multitude of foreign languages) are apostolic gifts for that particular age, but the baptism and filling of the Spirit with all its benefits are for every age in the New Testament church.
Regarding the controversial subject of speaking in “tongues”, we maintain that the Scriptures describe this only in terms of foreign languages, and not a mysterious, secret language of “prayer” claimed by some in our day. The purpose of the “tongue-speaking” was to validate the message – the speakers most certainly understood their own words, and Paul’s insistence on an interpreter in the church (1 Corinthians 13-15) is for the purpose of validation, not to inform the speaker of his own words. Paul’s mention of “tongues of angels” is meant as a deliberate hyperbole to make is point on the supremacy of love.
