In the previous verse, the Apostle Paul once again exhorted the Philippians and us to follow his example. He said: "Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do." It is no coincidence then that he immediately gives the church some examples of his outlook and attitude. Unless he was "tent-making" the apostle was usually dependent upon the generosity of the churches. There were times when the churches could not support him or they were neglectful in supporting him. That is to say, with everyone else he experienced the ups and downs of day-to-day life. Some days were full of bounty and other days were days of want. It may appear that though that the apostle is merely pointing to himself. But Matthew Henry notes that, "The apostle had seemed to boast of himself, and of his own strength: 'I know how to be abased…'; but here he transfers all the praise to Christ. 'What do I talk of knowing how to be abased, and how to abound? It is only through Christ who strengthens me that I can do it, not in my own strength.'" This is the real example of the apostle. It is only through Christ and His enabling and strengthening of us that we can persevere and truly rejoice.
