In our previous text in Exodus chapter 6, after declaring the things He would do for Moses and His people, God again called Moses and commanded him to go tell Pharaoh to let His people go. But we find Moses procrastinating as he objects that if the Israelites didn’t listen to him, how then could he expect Pharaoh to listen? (see 6:10-13; 28-30). God answers Moses saying “You shall speak what I command you. But Pharaoh’s heart shall be hardened.” In a series of “I will” promises, God had just assured Moses and the Israelites what He would do for them, namely: set them free, redeem them, adopt them, and give them their inheritance. In His grace and mercy God would reveal Himself to the Israelites so that they would know He is the LORD. But in Chapter 7, verse 4 God declares one more “I will”. He says, “I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.” God will judge Pharaoh and the Egyptians, and as a result, His people shall know that He is LORD as a result of His judgment.
In God’s final call of Moses, He assures Moses of the things which will soon take place. Israel shall be set free and Pharaoh and the Egyptians will be judged. Our text ends: “Then Moses and Aaron did so; just as the Lord commanded them, so they did.” As always, the will of God is done. Moses and Aaron go on to stand before Pharaoh and God will use them in His plan to set the Israelites free.
