"To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them BEAUTY FOR ASHES, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified." —Isaiah 61:3
The title of this message is suggestive of the grammatical play on words that occurs in the Hebrew words translated ”beauty“ and ”ashes“. They both contain the same three Hebrew letters, but in a slightly different order. The word translated "beauty" denotes a head dress worn during Jewish festival days. The "ashes" were what the Jews put on their heads to express their grief during a time of sorrow. By simply switching the first two letters of these Hebrew words, we are taken from sighing to singing...or as the title says, we go from mourning to morning.
This text is about the Lord's promise to lift his people from sitting among the ashes of sadness and bring them to a place of gladness and comfort.
