In our examination of the book of John we now come to the most impressive miracle in the Gospel – the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead. In this sermon, we examine the four characters in this story – in particular, how they expressed love toward each other. See if you can identify yourself with any of these characters.
1)Martha: expressing her love towards the Lord in service. In Luke 10:38-42 we see her serving; yet in her serving, she becomes irritable and complaining. The Lord corrects her for this. Martha had been serving for the wrong reasons. Rather than considering who it was she was serving, she had her mind on herself. How about you? Do you have a gift for serving
2)Lazarus: Nowhere is it recorded in Scripture that Lazarus speaks a word, yet we find that Lazarus became a great and effective witness for Jesus Christ. He became a great witness without saying a word as he was with Christ. In other words, he preached the gospel with his life.
3)Mary: She sat and listened. This is where she had learned of the love of Jesus. She knew that He was going to die for sin and she prepared herself to pour out her life to the Lord. The picture of Mary's devotion for Jesus is seen in her pouring out a fragrant oil and wiping His feet with her hair. The spiritual lesson that we learn from Mary's love for Jesus is that she gives everything back to the Lord.
4)Jesus: He expresses his love in a most unique and unusual way, which this sermon addresses.
