John writes two very short letters that we cover together in this letter. The first is written to "the chosen lady and her children". The second is written to Gaius, one of John's friends.
The first half of 2 John is to the lady and the last portion is for her children. The message is to watch out for false teachers, he calls them deceivers, who are determined to lead the brethren astray.
In 3 John he writes to Gaius (which means glad) to walk in the truth. In fact, he wrote he has no greater joy than to hear his children are walking in the truth. He also calls out two individuals, Diotrephes and Demetrius. The former seems to be a person who thinks he is more important than the message. The latter appears to be a person he commends for his good testimony.
John was like a father to his followers and he felt comfortable telling them what he saw.
