Peter's whole point in the text is that Christ did make His message known in the world before the flood, and that the people of that world despised it and ridiculed the man who preached it. But the day came when the flood came and took them all away. Peter's point is that false teachers found their answer in the flood waters, and that they shall find their answer now in the fire that will accompany the coming of the Lord.
