Paul's famous exposition of the Gospel of Christ as the good news of justification by faith rests on the platform of the reality of the wrath of God against the wickedness of human hearts. His message was delivered against a background of self-righteous hypocrisy in Judaism and openly perverted relativism in paganism. Yet, in spite of the truly wretched moral atmosphere of Imperial Rome in the First Century, the Gospel's power was remaking souls. There were Jews and Gentiles in Rome who had been converted to Christ, and who had been assembled in a church. The testimony of that church had gained worldwide influence, and it was for that reason that Paul held out high hopes that the Gospel of Christ, the power of God unto salvation, would continue to transform perverse sinners into saints of God.
