Martin Luther is well known for some of his quotes on prayer. “Prayer is the sweat of the soul.” He also stated, “I have so much to do that if I didn't spend at least three hours a day in prayer I would never get it all done.” David Brainerd, who died at the age of 29 after just several years of missionary work to the American Indians, was known for lying on a log in the middle of winter and crying out all night in prayer. I have been told that there is place in Korea where quite a number of Korean Christians have spent 40 days in prayer and fasting. James, the half-brother of Jesus, was said to have had knees like camels, because he spent so much time on his knees in prayer. So there are many examples of Christians both past and present that we could consider, but there is no example greater than that of our Lord and Savior. It is his example that above all the others we must seek to follow. By looking at some of Luke's examples, I want to challenge you that for the sake of your soul and for kingdom gain that you set aside specific times for private prayer. While prayer is something that we are commanded to do without ceasing, something that we do essentially all the time, there are times that we must get away as we are able and be alone in prayer with our Triune God. It is this characteristic of prayer that we see in the ministry of our Lord.
