After the fall of Belshazzar and Babylon, the Medes and the Persians took over the empire as Daniel had prophesied during the third year of Belshazzar's reign. Darius (who is probably also known as Cyrus) appointed governors (satraps) over the various provinces. He also appointed three to oversee all of the governors. One of which was Daniel. Because of his spirit, Daniel became the chief of the three. As we saw repeatedly in Acts, that made everyone else jealous of him and wanting to kill him. They could not find anything where he has acted against the interests of the king. Also, they understood Daniel well enough to know that their only opportunity is if he feels he must obey God rather than man. To create the separation, they devised a plot to make it illegal to make any petitions to anyone other than Darius. Daniel, knowing that it was a death penalty offense, continued his pattern from his youth of facing Jerusalem and visibly praying. It speaks to Daniel's reputation that all the satraps together knew that he was such a faithful man of prayer that he would rather die than to not pray. Would that be our reputation?
