Luke constructed his Acts narrative in reciprocating fashion, alternating his focus between the Church's internal life and its external mission. This approach was eminently suited to his goal of recounting the origin, identity and development of the Church, specifically as its existence and mission fulfill scriptural promise. Thus, having addressed the outward apostolic mission to Israel and its two divergent responses of faith/reconciliation and unbelief/opposition, Luke again directed his narrative inward to consider the effect of this opposition on the household of faith. So far from discouraging Christ's Church - let alone defeating His purpose in the world, Jewish hostility and persecution only strengthened the faith and resolve of the believing community. They recognized that this, too, was a matter of scriptural fulfillment; it was ordained by God for the fruitfulness of His gospel and the growth of His Church.
