The disciples have seen the Lord Jesus risen from the dead. They have spent time with HIm and want to know if it is time for the restoration of Jerusalem and the Kingdom of Israel. The question was self-evident. Now that Messiah had indeed come, they were fully expecting Him to establish His Kingdom right then and there. Jesus answer is revealing. He says it is not for them to know (experientially) the "chronos" or the "kairos", the specific time (chronos) or the period of time (kairos).
The key verse for the chapter and the book is 1.8--"you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall be my witnesses [not just in Israel, but] to the remotest part of the earth." After speaking these words, Jesus ascends into Heaven and takes His place at the right hand of God (see Ephesians 2.1-7)
