In 1 John 5:18-21, the apostle John reminds his readers, and us, of essential truths that we know:
- We KNOW that no one who is born of God [continually] sins (verse 18), but is guarded by God through faith (see also 1 Peter 1:5) - We KNOW that we are of God, and that we are behind enemy lines, because the whole world is in the devil's power (verse 19) - We KNOW that the Son of God has come and given us understanding of the truth by grace (verse 20)
John then closes the entire letter with a final appeal to the little children that he so affectionately cares for, that we guard ourselves from all false understandings of the nature of God and particularly the Person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. In days of much confusion and uncertainty, it is refreshing to meditate on the things that we know are true.
