After describing the privileges and responsibilities of believers the apostle warns them about their enemy and tells how to fight him. 'We do not wrestle against flesh and blood.' It is important to understand Satan (so far as that is possible) and know his methods. Although he has power to cause physical harm (and we may need extraordinary defence) his main aim is to lead people into sin. When Christ overcame him it was not by superior power, it was by application of principle - 'He bore our sins in his body on the tree'. Therefore being freed from sin's penalty through faith in Christ is essential for any defence we may have to make. We must also walk in God's laws, for our sinning is his winning. Any other defence we may have to make comes on the back of that. Otherwise we may engage in 'spiritual' activity as much as we wish but if we do not live a godly life the Judge may say, 'Depart from me'. The Apostle John made a wonderful statement when he wrote, 'The Son of God was manifested to destroy the work of the devil' (1 John 3:8).
