However, because sin affects everyone, so does idolatry. I would venture to say that the biggest idol in our cultural worship center is the idol of success. I.Outlook: Comparing Life's Pathways. Comparing Two Approaches to Life 2:18-21Labor's fruits may be squandered by one's heir (2:18-21)Reason 1: Because a person's success and wealth must be left to others (vv. 18-19a).Reason 2: Because a person's work and wealth are meaningless and can cause despair: They do not fully satisfy a person's heart (vv. 19b 20).Comparing Two Approaches to Labor 2:22-23Thus labor is not worth the effort (2:22-23) Reason 3: Because a person's estate—secured by hard work and skill—may be left to the lazy or indulgent (vv. 21-23).(2:24-26) The conclusion: Trust God.II. Up look: Comprehending Life's Purpose a. Live day by day—eat and drink and enjoy what God gives you (v.24a). When you trust God, day-to-day life is enjoyable and has meaning. b. Find satisfaction in your work: Know that life and work are gifts from God (v.24b). God's Creation Can't Produce Satisfaction God's Contribution to Mankind is Enjoyment God's Cares for Those Who Seek Him No matter what your job is, no matter what your career may be, you have a mission. It is your mission that defines you — not your bank account or your success at the office. Your mission involves serving others for the glory of God. Stop defining yourself by your job title; start defining yourself by your job description.
