Mark describes five encounters Jesus had with Scribes and Pharisees. The first one concerns the paralytic man. The miracle in this passage is not so much about the Lord physically healing this man but more about what Jesus was going to do spirituality for him. This man's physical condition was desperate; his spiritual condition was even more desperate and he knew it. The religious leaders and lawyers angrily questioned Jesus concerning His authority to forgive the paralytic man of his sins. Calling Jesus a blasphemer because He made Himself to be God with the forgiveness of sin Jesus responded with something they could see and understand. He healed the man of his disease. This show of supernatural power once again left the leaders with nothing to say. Regardless of what Jesus said or did or how he proved Himself, they refused to yield, saying "this is not our Messiah."
