The Order of Melchizedek (Heb 7-8:6) Introduction: Typology is "God's fingerprint on history."
Exposition: Melchizedek is such a prefiguring of the Messiah's person, offices, and work. Gen 14:18-20, Ps 110: Four verses in the whole OT about this mysterious figure.
(1) Jesus is from a superior priesthood (2) Jesus is a superior priest (3) Jesus is a HIGH priest, since he enters the Holy of Holies
Application: The people greatly missed having a high priest they could see, and they were having great difficulty because Jesus their High Priest was unseen. See Vos's quote at www.biblicaltheology.org/pch.pdf
But, when was the Levitical high priest most valuable to the people? It was when he was making atonement for the people and interceding for them BEHIND THE VEIL. In other words, it was by God's design that the Levitical high priest was unseen when he did his most important work of atonement and intercession. And so it is with our Lord. Thank God we can't see him. He has gone into the true Holy of Holies and SAT DOWN, henceforth to make intercession for us.
We live in a similar day when many people want something they can see, a white robe, a ceremony, a temple. But the author tells the people to call forth FAITH, the conviction of things NOT SEEN.
Conclusion: Rather let US by a new and living way enter the Most Holy Place OURSELVES where he dwells (Heb 10:19), and leave behind all these types and shadows.
