This sermon sets the background for the letter. Paul did not visit Colossae, and so the Colossians were in the same position as we are in: we didn't have an apostle visit us, but we have his letter. This shows us the importance of the Scriptures. The Word of God is true in every place and in every time, in every generation. Paul's letter to the Colossians may have corrected certain ideas that are not formally around today, but the principles of those ideas certainly are. The theories are there though the forms are different. So, with so much modern confusion and with the prevelance of false teachings today, our only hope and comfort must be the authoritative Word of God.
