~The Qualifications for Freedom~ Galatians 5:13-15
What is the doctrine of Christian freedom?
Freedom is not license. (v. 13)
What legalism is not—it is not freedom from moral law.
What legalism is—3 shades of legalism
Blatant Legalism-instituting laws that God has annulled.
Calling something the word of God that God does not call the word of God.
A legalistic attitude.
Freedom is not autonomous.
Freedom is service. (v. 13b) Philippians 2:4 - “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interest of others.”
Philippians 2:21 - “For they all seek after their own interest, not those of Christ Jesus.”
Freedom fulfills the law of God. (vs. 14-15)
What is the law?- 3 different levels of the law
Ceremonial law
Dietary law
Moral law
Application:
What do we mean by freedom is not license? What is the difference between obedience and legalism? Discuss the 3 shades of legalism. True freedom is realized in serving others. If this is true, how free are you? What does the statement “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” mean? Say we have freedom from the law. It does not mean we disobey it but, by the Holy Spirit, we have a lifestyle of freedom. Explain.
