In these scriptures, the people asked Jeremiah to ask the Lord what they should do. When Jeremiah told the people what the Lord said (not to go to Egypt) the people refused to obey God and went to Egypt anyway. The people were doing what made sense to them (to escape the Babylonians) and they were on their way to Egypt when they then told Jeremiah they would do whatever the Lord commanded. However, they actually only wanted to do what God said if the Lord went along with their plans. They did not want to repent. These people wanted to know where they would be safe. God is on the throne and is in control. We should not fear the governments, institutions, rulers, etc. There is nothing that can harm us if we are in obedience to God. If we are anywhere else, then we are not safe. When we walk in obedience to God, we might not have great health, wealth, etc. but nothing will be able to harm us. Sometimes it takes awhile to know what God is saying. We can never do better than to obey the Lord. There is nothing that we can do that is better than obeying God. We are safe in obedience to God.
