God raised up Joshua after Moses, and the period of Judges lasts during the approximately 400 years between the death of Joshua and the anointing of Saul as King. The Book of Joshua is a book of spiritual rest and a book of a type of Christ leading and the people following. In contrast, the Book of Judges is a book of spiritual unrest, the flesh, disbelief and each man acting as his own moral authority. Even during this period, God had a chosen people whom He redeemed. The Book of Ruth takes place during this time period and is a book of redemption. The widow Ruth marries Boaz, who is a powerful man among the Jews and a type of Christ. Boaz is a type of Christ in that he was the lord of strength, the lord of wealth, the lord of the harvest, the bread of life, the kinsman redeemer and the lord of rest. Boaz is in the line of David and shows us that God's providence is always moving His elect toward Christ. Samuel the prophet was also born during this time. His mother Hannah's prayer describes nine of God's attributes: there is none Holy as the Lord, God is independent, God is faithful, God is all knowing, God is the moral authority, God is sovereign, God is merciful, God preserves and God is just. All of this points us to Christ as our rest and He is the only one who has the right, the will and the power to redeem.
