With sadness and tenderness, our Saviour mourns over rebellious Jerusalem, revealing the spirit in which he considers needy sinners still. So here we can trace the sin committed, rejecting God's messengers and message of mercy. We see the danger present, the wrath hovering over the rebels. We marvel at the protection offered, the wings of Christ over those otherwise exposed to judgment. Then we are stunned by the mercy rejected, as men are not willing to receive Christ's saving favour. That brings us to the warning issued, the fear that mercy will pass us by if we do not heed the voice of mercy speaking now.
