In Acts 15, Paul and Barnabus have returned from their first missionary journey only to be confronted by "certain ones of the sect" (Acts 15.5) who do not think Paul and Barnabus have any business sharing the gospel with the gentiles. They had a problem - they had become enriched in a culture that said gentiles were inferior and could never truly appreciate the one true God. They not only did not understand the importance of gentiles coming to faith, they had allowed their pride to blind them to the new order God was creating in Jesus - a body made up of with parts from every nation, culture, and race, in the bond of unity.
Although the matter in Paul's day was of gentiles being able to coexist with Jewish men and women as brethren, today a racial divide continues, but it is now between black and white. Someone once told me the greatest example of segregation in America is church on a Sunday morning.
This is the first of a three-part lesson on breaking down the racial wall of partition in today's church. Much of what I will be teaching is honed from lectures by Pastor Tony Evans in Dallas entitled, Kingdom Race Theology.
With all the talk out there today about racial tension in America, it is important we know the truth about where God stands on racial unity. Hopefully, these will be lessons you will want to share with your friends, both black and white, about how we overcome divisions by becoming one body in Jesus, the Messiah.
