The faith in view in this passage is practical, everyday faith. Such faith is exalted in God's Word even above love as the pre-eminent grace (“Above all…”). If we could get more faith in Christ, we might be sure to have more love to our brother also. It should be our prime concern to make sure that we have genuine faith – that we have not “believed in vain.”
Once we are sure that we have authentic faith, we should seek its preservation and increase. We cannot afford to lower this “shield of faith” for even one unguarded moment!
Paul reminds us again that our struggle is not against “flesh and blood” or mere ideologies and philosophies, but against a personal Devil and his demon henchmen. Thus we need spiritual armor and spiritual weapons. Faith is what lays hold of all the supernatural resources of God Himself. Faith honors God, and God honors faith.
