You are not just called to merely suffer. You are called to follow Christ and obey His word even if that means that You suffer for being a Christian and for doing His will. But suffering can also be a temptation to turn away from following Christ. In Greek, the word for trial can also be translated as temptation. There is a close relationship between the two. Peter of course knew the temptation to turn away in the midst of difficulty, and so it is not surprising that he so often mentions the theme of suffering. The focus of our passage is, “Make sure you have the right perspective of suffering” We will consider first from verse 12-16, the call to not be surprised when suffering comes; second from verses 17-18, God's judgment and suffering; and from verse 19 a final encouragement in suffering.
