In this section of the Gospel of Mark, Jesus continues His descriptions and warnings of the coming times of trouble. He told the disciples to be on guard because of coming persecution, but not to worry because the Holy Spirit will give them words to speak when confronted. Even family members will betray one another during this difficult time. Some aspects of Jesus' prophecy seem directly tied to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70, but there is also a coming time of great tribulation that exceeds anything that has occurred since the creation of the world.
