As we go back to Hebrews we will see a great contrast with the ministry of Moses, the ministry of condemnation. Hebrews had started to talk about Melchizedek back in Chapter 5, but the writer said that they were not ready for difficult things because they were used to such pablum. In Chapter 7, he comes back to the subject of Melchizedek. He has already stated that Christ was a priest on the order of Melchizedek, but now he explains why Melchizedek is greater than Abraham which means he was greater than Moses since he is Abraham's offspring. After Abraham beat the seven kings and rescued Lot as well as the rescuing the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah, he did not go home. He went to give offerings to Melchizedek. Melchizedek is the king of righteousness and the king of peace, both of which are proper titles for Christ. It is also the nature of the kingship and priesthood of Christians. Abraham offered the fruits of war to the king of peace, just as we are to destroy all the kingdoms of this world and offer them as offerings to the true king of peace, Christ. Another thing that showed his priesthood was greater was it was not by flesh, his father and mother are not recorded, and it is everlasting, because there is no record of it starting or finishing. We read of the death of Moses when he stops ruling Israel. We read of the death of Aaron when he stops being the high priest. All the patriarchs have genealogies. Melchizedek doesn't. Not because he is less important, but because he was greater and because he pointed to Christ. This week we will consider how great this man was.
