We should all want to be reassured that we are loved by those closest to us. Some may consider it a weakness and may pretend that they don't really need to be told that they are loved. “I'm tough and self-sufficient. I don't need anyone but me.” That, my friend, is a serious error; for if you don't need the love of anyone else, then you don't need Christ's redeeming love and salvation, and then you declare yourself to be your own Savior and Christ's death and resurrection to be unnecessary. That savors of the ancient philosophy of Stoicism, which taught that self-sufficiency is the way to true contentment and happiness. Whereas, the Bible teaches that Christ-sufficiency is the only way to salvation, true contentment, and joy (Philippians 1:21).
We all know in our heart of hearts how we are tempted to doubt the love of others and even to doubt the love of Christ for us, His beloved bride. We desire not only to hear from our wife or husband, “I love you”, but to be reassured of that love in word and deed. There is nothing more invigorating, energizing, comforting, and reassuring when those doubts arise within you in the midst of trials, afflictions, and sorrows. When all is going well, the temptation to doubt the love of Christ is less likely, but passing through a fiery furnace is most often when the enemy suggests you are not loved. We have all known that doubt in our hearts, and it only magnifies the pain of the trial we face. Whereas, to be reassured that you are loved renews your strength to persevere rather than to drop to the ground and to quit. That's the common experience of us all, even of the elect bride of the Lord Jesus from our text today.
