Classic Covenanter preaching (by the last Covenanter martyr) explaining (in great detail) why God sometimes, even often (during the 1260 years of the great apostasy in which we now live), brings extreme suffering and persecution upon His church. This is a great example of the deep-thinking and practical preaching that the killing times in Scotland produced. Such preaching, which took place at conventicles (field meetings) under the constant threat of Royalist attack (and the possibility of instant martyrdom) makes most preaching today look like a sickly and pathetic imitation of what must have been taking place under the apostles (and among some of the early Christians) when they were constantly facing threats of persecution and martyrdom from Rome. This is a meaty meal, great for those who desire an understanding of God's mysterious providential dealings with men, containing much encouragement for those undergoing trials. One customer, after hearing this sermon, comented, 'it is one of the best sermons I have ever heard.' This sermon is read by Elder Lyndon Dohms from A Choice Collection of Very Valuable Prefaces, Lectures, and Sermons Preached Upon the Mountains and Muirs of Scotland In the Hottest Times of the Late Persecution By that Faithful Minister and Martyr of Jesus Christ the Reverend Mr. James Renwick (1776 ed.)
