Christians are citizens of God's kingdom and their ultimate allegiance lies with him. Yet, God's people also live among the kingdoms of this earth. Peter encourages the church to willingly submit to the governing authorities while seeking the good of their communities—this is right; it is the will of God. Where such submission would contradict God's law and the ethics of his kingdom, the believer sides with God, always. Above all, God's people are free—that is, they no longer have an identity forged by life in this world. Rather, their identity is found in relationship to God, whom they wholeheartedly serve. Let us faithful serve the Lord as those who are free!
