INTRODUCTION: It has never been God’s will for man to robotically serve Him, but to serve from the heart. In addition to God’s mandatory service given to the nation of Israel, the Lord also offered several options for voluntary service. This particular lesson deals with one such opportunity—the law of the Nazarite. Combined with Numbers chapter 5, this lesson serves to demonstrate the full aspect of biblical separation: 1.) Numbers chapter 5—separation from something, and 2.) Numbers chapter 6—separation unto God. Before proceeding, here is some foundational information on the subject chapter. The chapter is made up of twenty-seven verses, which is three (the number of divine being) times nine (the number of fruitfulness). This is similar to the Book of Leviticus which has twenty-seven chapters and deals much with holiness and separation). It too is a multiple of the number for fruitfulness. Numbers chapter 6 testifies of the fruit of the divine being working within the heart of man. To further emphasize this association, Numbers chapter 6 contains several special key words and phrases: 1.) separate, separateth, and separation—occur 16 times; 2.) holy—occurs 3 times; 3.) consecrate and consecration—occur 3 times; 4.) the phrase “unto the Lord”—occurs 8 times. Israel was already separated by God; the Nazarite was separated to God. The purpose was to turn the people to God.
