After Jacob steals the blessing that Isaac had intended for Esau, Esau was furious. Is there no blessing at all for him? He begs Isaac to give him something – and Isaac dies, but it is not something that either Isaac or Esau expects: it is an anti-blessing, declaring that Esau and his descendents would be servants of Jacob. But one day they would throw off the yoke of Israel’s dominance. This prophecy would find its culmination in the Davidic Covenant through which God would carry out his plan of redemption.
